... How to Write a Thesis Statement - I recently touched up an old handout, and would welcome feedback.
How to Write a Thesis Statement
A thesis statement is the single, specific claim that your essay supports. A strong thesis answers the question you want to raise; it does so by presenting a topic, your precise opinion on the topic, and a reasoning blueprint that sketches out the organization for the rest of the paper. A good thesis is not merely a factual statement, an observation, a personal opinion or preference, or the question you plan to answer.
Black Elk Speaks accurately represents Indian lifestyle through its attention to cultural detail, its use of Indian words, and its direct quotes from Black Elk.
Topic: The representation of Indian lifestyle in the book Black Elk Speaks
Precise Opinion: the book is accurate
Reasoning Blueprint: the book pays attention to ... Position Announcement: Instructor of Writing Enriched Curriculum -

"A tall thin old man comes backwards slowly and carefully through the glass door, carrying a metal stepladder in one hand, and in the other a small pot of paint and a small brush. With an air of methodical tidiness, he leans the stepladder against the front of a left-hand stall, stands the pot of paint next to it, places the small brush sideways across the exact centre of the top of the pot."
The fifth part of a hyperfiction based on visits to churches in the City of London. Part 5 takes in the following:

"The elements of the dinner-parties which Mrs Lennox gave, were beauty, men, and pedantic conversation. They talked in a sensuous way outside, lashed themselves when they were alone, and squandered their capabilities in the drawing-room."

The Chora of the Twin Towers -
I'd like to announce publication of a special project for 9/11 and the rhet/comp community. The project is entitled "The Chora of the Twin Towers" and has been published on 9/11/11 at Enculturation by Robert Leston (NYC College of Tech), Geof Carter (Saginaw Valley State), and Sarah Arroyo (California State Long Beach).
It will occupy Enculturation as the only featured project for the week following 9/11. After the first week, it will be featured as the lead project in the next issue.
Abstract:
This project sets a new precedent for sustained scholarly investigation in the medium of video. Determined to examine how the former ground zero and current World Trade Center site could be thought of as a space for invention (but also mourning), the authors draw upon the ancient concept of “chora.”
Conceived of by ancient philosophers and reconceived by contemporary rhetoricians as an undecided, undetermined space to be filled b... CCCC-IP Position Statement on Plagiarism Detection Services - Well hello! How shameful that I haven't posted since July. This is just a quick link to the CCCC Intellectual Property Caucus's position statement on plagiarism detection services. It doesn't seem to be online anymore, and I've been asked to provide it, so I'm uploading my copy as an attachment to this post.
... Facebook (or Foursquare) Check-in as Rhetorical Act - I just got an iPhone about a month ago, and I've been taking advantage of the check-in feature from time to time. I can't help but notice where people are when they choose to hit the check-in button, though. The laundromat? McDonald's? Walmart? The Exxon station? The free clinic? Not so much. Check-ins are all part of the crafting of the person we want to show people. Why else do we do it? To let others know where we are in case they're also there? We would have seen them already anyway. To let people know where we are if they're nearby?* They probably wouldn't actually come to that place to see us, for fear of seeming stalkerish (I wouldn't take it that way).
I'm as guilty as anyone of checking in at certain places: the gym, the public library, the science museum, the farmers' market, church. These places tell people what -- that I care about being a good mom, that I care about health and intellectual enrichment. One of my FB friends has great check-ins: Big Lots, ... Indirect Assessment of ULL's First-Year Writing Program - I recently received an Instructional Improvement Mini-Grant (link goes to a PDF) to do a somewhat large-scale indirect assessment project for our writing program. I, along with my most excellent research assistant, have distributed a survey to 512 students so far, with maybe about 35 more surveys expected.
Here is our survey. You can see that it's based on the Consortium for the Study of Writing in College's survey instrument created by:

The issue of access is one of the main reasons our field has held a prolonged interest in copyright and intellectual property matters. We want everyone to have access to education, art, science, and culture. We want open-access publishing in general, for our scholarship and for teaching resources. But we especially empathize with college students and their diverse financial situations; many are, as we all know, accruing student loan debt, juggling class schedules and work schedules, and, in some cases, supporting their families. Admittedly, many others are racking up high bar tabs, paying high membership dues to fraternities or sororities, and buying expensive clothes, but we maintain concern for the students who are struggling to pay their bills and whose financial future is especially uncertain. Such concern means that we -- especially those of ... My first Prezi - I presented this talk today at LACC to an audience of two. But it went fairly well. But what's this all about? Via the NCTE Inbox email newsletter, I saw this evening that CCCC is having a "Virtual Conference," a.k.a. "Flavor of the 2011 CCCC Convention," for the first time ever. The email said:
If you just can't make it to the CCCC Annual Convention in Atlanta next month, join us for the very first CCCC Virtual Conference. Designed to bring you a flavor of the 2011 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Annual Convention, the virtual conference offers some of the same great sessions and topics as the onsite conference -- without the cost of travel.
Well OK, I thought, I can't make it to the conference in Atlanta (I didn't submit a proposal this time around, rather), so I'll see what they're doing. I was unpleasantly surprised to see that the virtual conf... Computers and Composition Review - Doing my part for the intellectual commons -- Elsevier allows authors to post copies of their published work on their personal web sites, after all, so here it is. I've always thought scholars ought to keep online repositories of their own work, like Carolyn Miller. I want to do the same, maybe with an OpenScholar site. But for now, this book review I wrote is on Scribd:

... Kipling's Prose - Another one from the papers-of-yore files. I wrote this one in spring 1998, the semester after I graduated. I ended up taking a year off between my B.A. and starting my M.A. program (fall of 1999), and I took three courses in spring 98 as a non-degree-seeking student in an attempt to stay sharp.
My assignment here was simply "write a paper about Kipling's prose." Before that, I had to write a paper about Thomas Babington Macaulay, which I don't have in electronic format. I don't know where the hard copy is either, actually. But yeah, Kipling's prose. I read SO MUCH Kipling for this paper, which is good, but the paper is pretty lousy. This is why broad topics aren't such a good idea. But the professor I had for this course was excellent -- one of my favorites -- and I think his goal for us here was breadth rather than depth.
